Shenzhen attractively presents itself to Hong Kongers with its low prices and wide range of activities, enticing people to cross the border and delve into a metropolis of mainland China. Many may come for the shopping discounts and enticing entertainment, but just like any other urban area, there are hidden treasures that can only be found with local knowledge.

Luckily for travelers, Brent Deverman has uncovered the hidden wonders of Shenzhen, with his startup, ShenzhenParty.com. An American entrepreneur from Michigan, Deverman created a general English guide that aggregated the best of what Shenzhen had to offer. Night clubs, restaurants, jobs and real estate are all featured on ShenzhenParty.com, allowing foreigners the chance to experience the country beyond its tourist attractions and inexpensive goods.

With ShenzhenParty.com in its twelfth successful year, we connect with Deverman, who enlightened us on his startup’s birth as well as what he plans for its future.

How did you come up with this idea?

I had the need myself so I created it for myself and everybody else started to use it.

Who are you targeting and how big is the market in HK/Asia?

I’m targeting the English speaking community in Shenzhen including expats, overseas Chinese, and returned Chinese that have studied abroad and are looking to work in western companies.

What are your future plans for your startup?

I would like to redesign the site to support mobile devices as well as to make it easier to use based on learnings over the years.

1 Benefit and 1 Challenge in the HK startup scene?

There is a lot of enthusiasm and people willing to help. I find it difficult to tap into the startup scene from capital with a mainland firm.
