5 Questions With Jason Ngan, Co-Founder of NYC and Hong Kong Startup Bindo

Retail platform Bindo is a cloud-based inventory indexing tool that brings merchants online through an iPad Point-of-Sale system. A NYC startup that realizes the breadth of business opportunity in Hong Kong, Bindo is now developing a ‘Square’-type mobile payment solution for the local market and has their office in Hong Kong Science Park.

Co-founder Jason Ngan comes from a physics and electrical engineering background and first entered the entrepreneurial realm doing network security for a tech startup. Although Bindo is Jason’s first startup business, he fills his spare time building websites, mobile apps and setting up network infrastructure for friend’s companies.

Allison Baum Talks About Her New Role As Fresco Capital Advisors’ Newest Managing Director

Alongside the wisdom Hong Kong startup scene pioneers have to impart, those relatively new to the ecosystem also bring disruptive ideas and much needed expertise.

Take the tenacious Allison Baum for example. After singlehandedly bringing New York’s General Assembly to Hong Kong against all odds, she’s now working alongside Fresco Capital Advisors’ Tytus Michalski as their new managing director.

“I had really poured my heart and soul into getting General Assembly started – it was like my baby so it was hard to step away. But in many ways, it became much bigger than me,” said Allison. “That’s the most satisfying thing I think – that you’ve created something that can live on without you.”

5 Questions With Florence Coirier Giraudon, Founder of BuyMeDesign

Having worked in the design industry for many years as a designer and account director for various agencies, Florence launched the first design publication for Asia when she first moved to Hong Kong in 2009. Through this, she was able to develop an eye for spotting emerging talents. After interviewing local designers, she went on to curate several design events such as designr-rdv at DETOUR Hong Kong.

Realizing she had a passion for spotting, sharing and supporting designers from around the world, BuyMeDesign was born as a combination of a blog, community and e-commerce site. In their launch, BuyMeDesign’s first featured product was the Pop Phone by Native Union – which has gone on to achieve legendary and iconic status.

What is your startup?

Buymedesign is the Asian online curator for designers and shops. We are not doing flash sales, we sell at premium to retailers and consumers. At our core is the ability of our design curators and spot contributors to scout the world and reveal undiscovered gems of design.
