10 Hong Kong Startup Founders Share What They Most Look Forward to in 2015

HONGKONG-NEW YEAR

Happy holidays startups! 2014 has been a huge year for the Hong Kong startup scene and we can all attest to the speedy growth of our ecosystem.

Take mobile logistics startup Gogovan for example. The homegrown startup picked up their US $6.5 million Series A over the summer, then an additional $10 million last month – for a total of $16.5 million raised in 2014 alone. Or Google’s acquisition of enterprise tech startup Divide which was much buzzed about.

And how about the three new accelerator programs that have all arrived in the past year? Besides Accenture’s ‘FinTech Innovation Lab’ launching back in June, Swire Properties’ ‘blueprint’ for B2B startups has also arrived on the scene with AIA and Nest teaming up to create a new accelerator program for wearable tech and healthcare startups.

Hong Kong Crowdfunding Platform ‘LIKEfunding’ Converts Facebook ‘Likes’ to Cash For Charities and Creative Projects

Whether used by your average netizen to spread local news or by foreign brands who want to engage with customers in China, social networks are the ultimate outreach tool. And what about the power of crowdfunding? Platforms such as Kickstarter and Indiegogo have now gone mainstream, helping turn the zaniest and most innovative ideas into products you see on store shelves today.

One Hong Kong startup LIKEfunding wants to harness those two powers to help charities, social enterprises and creative projects – and they’ve created a fundraising tool that raises cash via Facebook ‘Likes.’

How does it work? LIKEfunding does matchmaking between charitable and creative projects with like-minded sponsors, and the two collaborate to create a campaign. While a Kickstarter project might set a fundraising goal of ‘x’ number of dollars, a LIKEfunding campaign sets goals of ‘x’ number of Facebook ‘Likes’. Every ‘Like’ is converted into $2 which is paid out by the sponsor.

After we learned about Sensbeat, the team of HKUST students that built a startup while juggling full-time studies (and still managed to graduate), we were floored by the talent and passion of Hong Kong’s young entrepreneurs. To date, Sensbeat has picked up US $500,000 – the largest first round of funding raised by a student-founded startup.

Another student startup that got on our radar was Umbrella Here – the happy-go-lucky team of interaction designers that decided to become entrepreneurs via a series of fortunate events. Made up of four PolyU students majoring in ‘Interaction Design,’ the Umbrella Here team created a Bluetooth light umbrella attachment controlled by a mobile app just as a side project – initially in response to the ‘Connect’ theme of the Interaction Awards. Just like a taxi ‘hired’ sign, the light indicates that the umbrella is available for sharing when switched on.

With no concrete plan, the four friends decided to enter Umbrella Here into a number of competitions in Hong Kong, Beijing and Shanghai. After winning a few (including the Hong Kong ICT ‘Interaction Design Gold Winner,’ the China University Business Challenge Winner), the team realized that they had a great product on their hands – but as they were all design-oriented, they struggled with the business side of things.
