Hackathons and Hong Kong: A Natural Fit

Angelhack Hackathon

Between Chinese New Year and the end of March this year six hackathons will have taken place in Hong Kong. From the HK Budget Hackathon to the HKUST Hackathon right after our event, the MasterCard Masters of Code Competition, tis the season for hacks.

You’ve definitely heard the word “hackathon” if you’ve been paying attention to the tech industry over the past few years. You may not completely understand what goes on at one of these, but what you should know is it’s become a vital part of today’s tech culture.

To clarify, a hackathon is a gathering of mostly developers and designers coming together to pitch product ideas, try out a new coding language, network, collaborate and compete for prizes.

Hackathons, like anything in the tech world, change rapidly. When AngelHack started in the space almost three years ago, having a venue and some Red Bull was generally enough for a good event. Pull Up a Red Chair and Get Ready for ‘An Evening with Walt Mossberg’ in Hong Kong

walt

The man, the legend, the sitter in red chairs: Walt Mossberg – returns to Hong Kong for an intimate and interactive evening on March 20 to discuss technology and startups at the Qube at PMQ in Central.

After years as the principal technology columnist at The Wall Street Journal, he decide to take his destiny into his own hands with Re/Code setting up a brand new media company with his partner-in-crime Kara Swisher.

Walt is no stranger to Hong Kong as he brought his D: All Things Digital conference to Hong Kong a few years ago and rebranded it Asia D. They brought some of the biggest names in tech to the stage at the Grand Hyatt and we got to hear the latest from Twitter’s Jack Dorsey, AirBNB’s Brian Chesky (who we kidnapped for our Startup Saturday event that weekend!) and even former Vice-President Al Gore – who by the way, is a great selfie taker and flew a sustainable commercial airline to HK!

This time instead of Walt interviewing tech people, StartupsHK founders Casey Lau and Gene Soo will be turning the tables and talking to Walt about things like: running a media empire in the 21st century, Silicon Valley vs Asia, game changing startups, Apple Watch and wearable devices, the future of VR and Oculus Rift, electric cars, space bound startups and of course reminisce about Steve Jobs. If Casey is on stage, we won’t leave until there is at least one Steve Jobs story shared.

Register now to see Walt speak and watch our showcase of the brightest stars in the Hong Kong startup scene!

DBS Hackathon

UPDATE: An info session will be held at Garage Society this Friday 13th Feb

On March 4 to 6 of this year, DBS will be bringing DBS Hackathons to Hong Kong for the first time. After last year’s undoubted success in Singapore, the DBS Hackathons are back – bigger, better and with more gateways to success for the participants.

This time, the organisers – DBS Bank along with innovation and data-challenge organiser, Ideatory – have issued a simple yet emphatic call to mobile solution app developers wanting a chance to make inroads into the bustling fintech scene: come take part and MAKE IT BIG!

This year’s Hackathons will take place in Singapore (Feb 25 to 27) and Hong Kong (March 4 to 6), before the Megahackathon back in Singapore from March 25 to 27. Why “mega”? Because it will be done at a scale larger than all the preceding hackathons.
