Hong Kong’s Sensbeat Launches Social Networking App for Music Lovers with HK$2 Million Investment

Ben Chan, Leo Wong and Conrad Lo (pictured above) are the co-founders of Sensbeat, a newly launched Hong Kong mobile startup that wants to be Twitter for music lovers.

Having raised HK$2 million to date from a group of Hong Kong and Silicon Valley investors (one of which is new business angel Kyle Lam), Sensbeat has been beta testing their product with 500 users in the local market and is now ready for a wider audience.

After a chat with co-founder and CEO Leo Wong, we were quickly inspired by his startup story. When Sensbeat was founded less than two years ago, Leo and his co-founders Ben Chan (CTO) and Conrad Lo (CPO) were only third year students at HKUST. The ‘aha moment’ was when Leo, a Hong Kong native, finished an exchange term in Spain and was traveling in Switzerland. Experiencing sentimental feelings listening to ‘Goodbye’ by Air Supply, Leo wished he could share that feeling with his friends back at home.

Hong Kong DIY eCommerce Startup ‘Shopline’ Joins Silicon Valley-Based Accelerator 500 Startups

The hits keep on rolling in this week for Hong Kong startups! Our own Shopline has been accepted into 500 Startups’ Batch 10.

The global accelerator program has invested in a number of successful startups to date, such as MakerBot, Twilio and our very own 9GAG. Startups that go through the four-month program not only have access to 500’s massive network of 1,000 founders, 200 startups and staff, but will also receive seed funding of US$100,000.

Having already swapped the Hong Kong heat for cooler weather in San Francisco, we had a chat with co-founder and CEO Raymond Yip, about the exciting news.

After impressing Rui Ma, venture partner of 500 Startups Beijing, with a great pitch, Shopline was selected to join the Bay Area accelerator’s tenth cohort. Despite having called NYC his home for many years, Raymond said that the Shopline team no plans to relocate to the US anytime soon.

Even though they will have facetime with 500’s founding partner and resident Sith Lord Dave McClure, lets hope that none of his horrible Powerpoint slide design rubs off on Shopline’s keen design sensibilities when they return.

Hong Kong’s ACE HEARING is the winner of the ‘Community Impact’ Award at this year’s ‘Talent Unleashed Awards,’ held at the W Hotel last week. For the first time ever, the ceremony took place simultaneously in Hong Kong, Singapore, Sydney and Auckland in a live broadcast.

The legendary likes of Richard Branson, Steve Wozniak and our own Yat Siu made up the judging panel helping awards organisers ‘Talent International’ sift through 600+ entries across the region. The final six winners will take a whirlwind trip down to the Branson Centre for Entrepreneurship in South Africa for a five-day workshop come November.

We had a chat with ACE HEARING’s co-founder Paul Lee to find out more about the big win. Besides bringing public attention to the importance of hearing health, Paul said that the results of this year’s ‘Talent Unleashed’ also puts Hong Kong startups, who he considers a “best kept secret,” in the limelight.
