Amongst deals, mergers and acquisitions, it’s been a busy year for Hong Kong so far.

The latest back-to-back exits of homegrown startups Divide and Cherrypicks is proof that the ingenuity of our entrepreneurs are stronger than ever before. Just when we couldn’t get any prouder of our burgeoning startup scene, the prestigious ‘Talent Unleashed Awards’ announced that it was extending its reach to include Hong Kong and Singapore. The aim of ‘Unleashed’ is to celebrate individuals whose impactful ideas could potentially change the world, whether it be solving business problems or helping a community in need.

While the overall winners will be chosen by the legendary Richard Branson and Steve Wozniak, our own Yat Siu was invited to represent Hong Kong as a regional judge. See more details on each award category here.

The Start Knight Rises: Startup Weekend Hong Kong Powers the New RISE Program at CoCoon

This kick off post was written by startup mentor Marcel Ekkel and was first published on Medium.

RISE @ CoCoon, a five-day program powered by the lean startup materials used by Startup Weekend, is looking to add 2-3 more teams. If interested, please fill in this registration form ASAP.

As this is a pilot edition we are happy to get going with (just) four teams. Compared to a Startup Weekend the format and the dynamics are very different. SWNEXT has a focus on a team that has started already. The mentorship will be exploring more width and more depth and in line with that be able to spend more time with teams.

This is possible as the program is spread out over 5 weeks, with 1 contact evening every week. During the evening we start with covering work to be done from last week, followed by a mentor introduction into the new topic and ending with some FaceTime with respective mentors.

The topic of the first session was CUSTOMER DISCOVERY and we found 2 mentors willing to share their experiences and insights into the matter. Though before getting to that, the evening was kicked off with a first attempt to a 1 minute pitch followed by their discussion of the preparatory work for this week.

In the last two months, we’ve been seeing a lot of Ray Chan of 9GAG. Not only was he a keynote at PingWest’s one-day conference at CoCoon a couple weeks ago, but he was also a speaker at the just past Echelon 2014 in Singapore.

As arguably one of Hong Kong’s biggest startup success stories, what has 9GAG been working on? We had a chat with Ray to find out.

After a reminiscing on past projects such as their photo sharing app, karaoke venture and StartupQuote, which helped them land a spot in 500Startups in the first place, Ray said that the 9GAG team is now working on new verticals for the site, such as the newly added ‘World Cup’ section. Ray stressed that any changes to the popular content-sharing platform, including 9GAG.tv, isn’t a product of Internet trends – but are based on data gleaned from user activity.
