After raising $1 million in Series A funding from China’s IDG-Accel, Hong Kong startup AfterShip is on a hiring spree to grow their development team.
Currently offering packaging tracking software for online retailers, AfterShip wants to refine its services by providing real-time information for merchants, which will require more technical know-how.
“Right now, we’re focusing on hiring because we only have three people in our team: me, my co-founder and a back-end developer,” said Andrew Chan, co-founder of AfterShip. “We do package tracking for online retailers but we’re missing the data analysis for tracking data to help merchants find out the package delivery times.”
According to Andrew, the young startup is hiring back-end, front-end and iOS developers, but is also looking to add a CTO to their team – offering more than HK $45,000/month for the senior role. AfterShip was a product of Hong Kong’s first ever Startup Weekend back in 2011, where Andrew met his co-founder Teddy Chan. The two have since built a successful startup, having signed on 180+ global carriers, 150,000 active users (including large brands Groupon and Etsy) and is currently tracking 3 million monthly shipments since their public launch in July 2013.
Andrew said innovating in logistics, considered the unsexy side of eCommerce, is one of the reasons that AfterShip has been so successful. “We look at the boring side of eCommerce which is package tracking, which is an area that many startups may overlook. But maybe that’s where an opportunity may appear – so never underestimate those unsexy ideas,” he said.
As for advice to those first-time founders just getting their feet wet, Andrew said to cut your losses if you aren’t moving the meter: “focus on your product and build the traction first. If the product doesn’t have traction within 6 months, start another idea. Don’t stick with an idea that does not have traction.”
