Hong Kong Legal Startup Dragon Law Soft Launches Their Legal Services Platform to Help Startups

One of the most often questions we get at StartupsHK is: Can you introduce me to a startup friendly lawyer?

As a first-time founder, you may not be too familiar on the legal aspects of your startup. In fact, you’re probably keen on focusing on business and product development instead. That’s where legal startup Dragon Law comes in.

Combining technology with know-how, Dragon Law provides a suite of legal services for startups that struggle or would like to spend less time in that area. The first layer of their subscription-based services is very hands-off, where startups will have access to Dragon Law’s legal document builder that draws from an online library of startup-friendly templates. ‘The Starter Package’ (rolls out by the end of this year), might appeal to the entrepreneur that just needs a simple contract drawn up with the occasional customer support via email.

The second layer would appeal more to entrepreneurs that need a legal helpline here and there, but also want to avoid paying astronomical hourly fees for a lawyer. ‘The Professional Plan’ lets startups reach out to the Dragon Law team of lawyers and paralegals for email and telephone support on an ad-hoc basis. The third layer is targeted more so toward SMEs with larger documentation requirements. Visit their website for pricing details.

There are many ways to demonstrate the value and impact of UX, here’s some to get you started.

Design as strategy

Start by putting UX into context. UX falls under a more general “Design” strategy. Design-led organisations are ones that have a clearly stated vision and mandate to be customer and human centric. Design is part of their strategy to remain competitive, disruptive and innovative.

Meet Hong Kong’s ‘Umbrella Here’: A Team of Student Interaction Designers That Accidentally Built a Startup

After we learned about Sensbeat, the team of HKUST students that built a startup while juggling full-time studies (and still managed to graduate), we were floored by the talent and passion of Hong Kong’s young entrepreneurs. To date, Sensbeat has picked up US $500,000 – the largest first round of funding raised by a student-founded startup.

Another student startup that got on our radar was Umbrella Here – the happy-go-lucky team of interaction designers that decided to become entrepreneurs via a series of fortunate events. Made up of four PolyU students majoring in ‘Interaction Design,’ the Umbrella Here team created a Bluetooth light umbrella attachment controlled by a mobile app just as a side project – initially in response to the ‘Connect’ theme of the Interaction Awards. Just like a taxi ‘hired’ sign, the light indicates that the umbrella is available for sharing when switched on.

With no concrete plan, the four friends decided to enter Umbrella Here into a number of competitions in Hong Kong, Beijing and Shanghai. After winning a few (including the Hong Kong ICT ‘Interaction Design Gold Winner,’ the China University Business Challenge Winner), the team realized that they had a great product on their hands – but as they were all design-oriented, they struggled with the business side of things.
