What’s New At NEST: CEO and Angel Investor Simon Squibb Gives Us a Full Update

NEST, Hong Kong’s people-focused investment incubator, is a local driving force in developing Hong Kong as a global hub. With a track record in developing consumer lifestyle businesses, NEST takes a hands-on approach with young companies in their seed and start-up phases.

We spoke to CEO Simon Squibb, and he said that NEST has invested HK $30 million into startups, and plan on following suite this year. “We’re following the Y Combinator model from the US and offering capital and support to Hong Kong-based founders and startups,” he said. “We will co-invest with others and expect to push over HK $100 million into the Hong Kong startup scene over the next 18-24 months.”

Hong Kong Government Steps Up Support for Hong Kong Startups with Launch of iStartup@HK Portal

Over the last one and a half year or so, startups started to appear on the radar of the Hong Kong government. Slowly a realisation started that (tech) startups are different than the regular small and medium enterprise and as such have different needs.

A sign of interest was that Startup Weekend was visited by senior officials of the Office of the Government chief information officer (OGCIO). Ms. Joey Lam, JP (Deputy Chief Information Officer, responsible for Policy and Community), where she handed out some of the prizes for the winners of the 3rd edition. Talking to participants and seeing them in action must have created some inspiration as the next edition SWHK was invited to be part of the IT Fest.

Ready for Hong Kong Satellite tomorrow night?

We’re partnering with tech blog e27 to host Echelon Hong Kong Satellite, a pitching event preliminary to this year’s Echelon. Satellites are pitch events hosted in major Asian countries such as Malaysia, Japan, Korea and Thailand where shortlisted startups pitch to a judging panel of key investors and community leaders. One winner is selected from each Satellite event, and startups will represent their home cities at the huge June 10-11 conference in Singapore.
