When it comes to traditional business communications, long contracts and expensive fees come to mind. As the 21st century calls for constant mobility, many people are spending most of their time out of the office, meeting customers from all over the globe.

Singapore-based Hoiio (pronounced ‘hoy-yo’) wants to simplify business communications for SMEs, startups and enterprises using the cloud. With Hoiio, one business number can be exclusive one person anywhere in the world – all for just HK $38/month. Not limited to just incoming calls, users can also make outgoing (local and international) calls via Hoiio’s app on a pay-as-you-go basis.

We had a chat with Joey Chu, Hoiio Hong Kong’s biz dev, and he shared why his company decided to grow their business in Hong Kong.

Joey says that Hoiio’s founder Kok Choong chose Hong Kong not necessarily because it’s a profitable market, but because of its overall global competitiveness.

“If Hoiio can succeed in Hong Kong, they can be successful anywhere,” Joey said. “Hong Kong is truly the top competitive market in the world, even more competitive than Singapore. If we can make it here, this would have symbolic meaning to the company.” In the past, Hoiio has also expanded to Malaysia and hopes to tackle the Japanese market in the future.

With a 40-person team in Singapore, Hoiio was founded in 2007 but spent the first few years exploring options for the company before becoming profitable in 2009. According to Joey, Hoiio has over 20,000 active customers and is looking to connect with local IT solutions providers to distribute their services to enterprises.
