Together with 11 awesome Hong Kong startups, we went to the TechCrunch Shanghai 2013 earlier this month and we hit it out of the park. It was a huge event which attracted over 3000 attendees as well as 80 speakers and panelists from all over the world. StartupsHK along with Hong Kong Cyberport came together to create a Hong Kong Pavilion featuring the 11 Hong Kong startups which attracted people from all over China and the rest of the world who are keen to find out more about the startup scene in Hong Kong. There was an on site voting by attendees using stickers and we are happy to see that our startups received quite a lot of them.
Our local heroes include: AllMobilize, Astasys, Digi-Care, GogoGrad, Phonejoy, Slicify, Snaptee, Spottly, Stylecab, Surround App and Vimantra. You can check the full profiles of these startups on Startbase.Hk.
At the panel of startup scene in Taiwan and Hong Kong, Gene Soo, co-founder of StartupsHK shared the story about how StartupsHK came to be when he and other entrepreneurs encountered great difficulties in Hong Kong starting up back in 2009. The startup scene in Hong Kong has improved dramatically since. With over 20 co-working spaces for startups all over Hong Kong as well as the increasing frequency of startup events that brings together all the people involved, the Hong Kong startup ecosystem is surely growing. To startups in China, Hong Kong should be viewed as a launch pad to the international market where English is dominant. To startups in Hong Kong, if they intend to expand into China, they should look for local partners in China as opposed to going at it themselves.
