So many many start-up websites to read – and not enough time to read them all but stick these into your bookmarks and read them this weekend, and drop down your thoughts in the comments:

  1. you know what catches the eyes :)

  2. If Techcrunch can do it so can we! 😉

  3. Jonathan Buford says:

I think what is missing from that is a HK based list of startups.

  4. One of the things Posterous should be setting up is static pages, blogrolls and contributor profiles so that it can be a real competitor to WordPress and Moveable Type. Until we move to one of those platforms we will just have this as a basic blog. I can start a new thread and you can list all the startups you know in HK.

  5. Yea, no static page is a pain. There’s a workaround: http://www.isimplyblog.com/how-to-add-pages-to-posterous-blog/169/But the pages won’t be pick up by search engines because it’s private.

  6. Jonathan Buford says:

I’m thinking about putting together a livepool site of HK startups. I guess a basic wiki would work for this. Give a place for local startups to connect, investors to check out what is up and coming, and perhaps a job market.

  7. I was going to set that up on Ning.com this weekend. It has everything you said and a forum and connects easier. A Ning.com community will take about 10 minutes to set-up. We can have the RSS of this blog fed into that as well.

  8. Jonathan Buford says:

Actually, I started to set it up on Ning, but I didn't see a good way of it representing companies. They are very geared towards individuals.

  9. I just set it up – looks good: http://startupshk.ning.com/You can add your start-up under “Groups”

  10. Thomas Pun says:

    How about Google Group/Site?

  11. I tried Google Group before – its a bit messy and not very good looking. The Ning has very customizable UI’s and many easy add-ons.

  12. Jonathan Buford says:

I'm still not convinced Ning allows for something like companies that are editable by either the owners of the company or the site admin. I poked around a bit and couldn't find any way to do that. I guess what I've got in mind is something similar to CrunchBase.

  13. Jonathan Buford says:

Ning Groups kind of does it, but not really.

  14. Jonathan Buford says:

Ooh, juicy article on Ning:  Ning Exposed – Tech Company Scams its Clients

  15. not a big fan of ning just because it’s 1 extra thing for me to checki just want to check email, rss feeds, facebook and twitter and be done with my life!

  16. I suppose we can just host our own profile page, and link from the sidebar?

  17. Jonathan Buford says:

Yep, that is what I'm leaning towards. I can hack something like that together from a basic cms/wiki. I'd be surprised if I can't find something that already has it built in.

  18. Thomas Pun says:

Just a crazy thought.. Since it seems to be so much pain for us. Maybe we could use this as an exercise for ‘starting’ a mini startup. Gather whoever’s interested and “build something people want”. I could see how it’s beneficial for anyone who wants a taste of the whole startup cycle.

  19. Jonathan Buford says:

Fair enough. I'd be game, as I can see the value in it.

  20. When is the Punster coming back to HK? In time for our next meeting?

  21. Thomas Pun says:

Punster is here and not much jet lagged (to my surprise)! Heard Timzai said next meeting is Dec 21? Early morning or late night works best for me.

  22. 10:30am early enough? 😛

  23. Check your Facebook – you are the Guest of Honor 😉
