Hong Kong is becoming a conference haven for startups and the tech industry. With events like RISE, Internet of Life, StartMeUp Festival, UX Hong Kong, Cross Border Summit – the city is primed to be a major destination for people wanting to learn more and network with like-minded individuals.
We sat down with Charis Rooda – the founder of a new event coming in June called WebConf to find out more about her event:
Why did you start WebConf?
I am a bit of a conference junkie, both visiting as well as organising them. I already had a lot of experience organising the 2-day Fronteers conference in Amsterdam as well as organising various web related meetups and events in Hong Kong, and I missed organising something bigger.
Is there a gap in the market for developer conferences in HK?
Absolutely! There are some lovely community conferences that are almost free with local speakers and workshops, and on the other side there is the RISE conference that’s huge with international speakers and visitors. A high quality, international conference that’s still affordable is what’s missing in Hong Kong. With the network and knowledge I have build from previous conferences I think I am the right person in Hong Kong to make this happen.
What do you think of HK’s growing startup scene?
I think Hong Kong is not an easy city to run a startup but it’s great to see people are working incredibly hard to make it happen. In the past years I have seen a lot of people around me launching great products and services and I am only hoping for more.
